Only about 3% of animals are vertebrates (animals with backbones, like mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish).

The rest — a whopping 97% — are invertebrates, including:

  • Arthropods (insects, spiders, crustaceans)

  • Molluscs (snails, slugs, octopuses)

  • Annelids (worms)

  • Cnidarians (jellyfish, corals)

  • Echinoderms (sea stars, sea urchins)
